About this event

The murder of 11 worshippers in the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh in 2018 was the largest antisemitic massacre in U.S. history. In the aftermath, interfaith groups rallied for their Jewish neighbors in meaningful ways — including attending memorials, raising money for funerals and spearheading advocacy campaigns to combat gun violence.

With a national uptick in hate crimes against religious, racial and LGBTQ+ groups, among others, it’s time to ignite the power of interfaith cooperation to effect change.

Join the Burke Lectureship on Religion and Society for a screening of A Tree of Life: The Pittsburgh Synagogue Shooting (2022) followed by a candid conversation with Susan Margolin, Producer, and Allan Havis, UC San Diego Jewish Studies Director to improve community building, interfaith healing, and eradicating all forms of hateful violence.

This program is produced by Burke Lectureship on Religion and Society & UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies in co-sponsorship with UC San Diego’s Jewish Studies Program.

With over 25 years’ experience in the global film and television distribution business, Susan Margolin has built a reputation as a pioneer of digital distribution and a dedicated supporter of independent filmmakers and of the filmmaking community. After spending her early career in international film sales and television she launched New Video Group in 1991 with partner Steve Savage. Over the span of two decades New Video became a leading home entertainment distributor and global digital aggregator, featuring award winning film, TV and online content with an international presence in over 45 territories. A launch partner with key platforms including iTunes, Xbox, Amazon, Netflix, Hulu, Vudu, Sony PlayStation, Google and others, New Video distributed content via digital download, streaming, VOD, Blu-Ray and DVD and platform theatrical releases. During that time she partnered with over 500 content creators including A+E, History, Lifetime, Tribeca Films, Major League Baseball and Scholastic. In 2011, her company signed on as Sundance Institute’s exclusive digital content aggregation partner for Sundance Artist Services, providing a unique gateway to digital distribution that emphasized filmmaker involvement and rights management.

Havis is a Professor of Theatre at UC San Diego. His dramas have been produced at major theaters nationally and abroad. He is the author of nineteen full-length published plays and edited three American Political Plays anthologies. In the last three years he published the novels, Clear Blue Silence (Ktav Publishing 2022), Maddie Q (Willow River Press 2023), and Architects of the Taj Mahal (Willow Press 2024). He also penned two young adult novels, Albert the Astronomer (Harper/Collins 1978) and its sequel, Albert Down a Wormhole (Goodreads Press 2019).
