When community members enter UC San Diego Park & Market, they’re often greeted with delicious aromas emanating from the downtown venue’s eatery, Senses Human Bistro. The cafe, which is open for breakfast and lunch Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., recently launched weekly Jazz Feast events on Tuesdays where members of the community are cordially invited to enjoy a curated dinner menu, live jazz entertainment, and an opportunity to convene and celebrate with others.
Senses Bistro doesn’t just offer sumptuous eats, though—it’s also a space for creative inspiration. With this in mind, bistro founder Amanda Caniglia partnered with UC San Diego alumnus and muralist/educator David Burke in late 2022 to install a breathtaking mural, emblematic of the restaurant’s desire to be a space for human connection and creativity. The mural’s graceful and undulating lines evoke a sense of motion and development, while its vivid hues symbolize the range of human encounters. Burke’s remarkable artwork is the focal point of the bistro, establishing its ambiance and encouraging engagement. Bistro customers make repeat visits to take in the beauty of San Diego’s newest iconic work of art, losing themselves in its beauty, with a fresh new experience each time. Senses Bistro aims to engage all the human senses.
During breakfast and lunch, Senses offers a mix of Mediterranean and Italian cuisines as well as an award-winning espresso bar. The salads and croque are fan favorites. The restaurant also offers catering, both onsite for events at Park & Market and offsite as well.
The community is invited to the eatery’s new event called “Between the Notes,” a Jazz Feast. This series, curated by renowned pianist and composer Irving Flores, takes place each Tuesday from 6 to 10 p.m. at Senses Human Bistro, located on the first floor of Park & Market in the East Village neighborhood of downtown San Diego. The food and drinks are carefully crafted, inspired by the music of the evening, and change weekly. These events are free to the community but reservations are recommended as all events held to date have booked quickly.
Senses Bistro is also partnering with local musicians on a jazz album called “Project Senses – The Album Volume I.” This musical endeavor aims to shine a spotlight on the exceptional talent of female jazz vocalists in the San Diego community. The album will feature captivating performances by selected artists, recorded in a professional studio with the assistance of top producers. Supporters of “Project Senses – The Album Volume I” will help local artists and contribute to the enrichment of the jazz music scene.
