Building on UC San Diego Park & Market’s Signature Series Intersections, Intersecciones showcases diverse perspectives in various disciplines, focusing on binational programming that celebrates the unique intersection of culture, art, and innovation across borders.
Intersecciones launched at Park & Market in the fall of 2023, beginning with two events from the Instituto de Cultura de Baja California’s Festival de Octubre en Baja California 2023. The first was a presentation from Baja California-born authors Mónica Elizabeth González Rameño and Priscila Rosas Martínez, recipients of the Arts & Culture Award from the Secretary of Culture in Baja California for their short story “Inevitable” and the novel “Una Peluca Rubia.”
Following, a concert featuring María Reyna, a classical-trained soprano from the Mixe region in Oaxaca, México, delighted and inspired audience members. Reyna shared her culture through the sounds of her language, singing popular songs and well-known classical music translated into Mixe.
Park & Market also hosted the concluding event of the Festival de Octubre en Baja California—a screening of the 2020 documentary Fandango at the Wall, an acclaimed film that takes viewers along Arturo O’Farrill’s journey through the remotest regions of Veracruz, Mexico in search of musicians. The final presentation was sealed with a palomazo, a term commonly used to reference a spontaneous musical performance, by some of the film’s musicians.
The 2024 Intersecciones lineup at Park & Market is poised to be the best yet! Stay tuned for exciting updates, including announcements of special performances from the Baja State Orchestra, a new monthly film series, discussions with curated speakers, and much more.
