“An eclectic new concert series is always welcome, let alone one at an intimate new downtown San Diego venue,” wrote ‘Music Notebook’ columnist George Varga in an intro to a new series titled Intersections. Presented by UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies and hosted at UC San Diego Park & Market, Intersections is an interdisciplinary event series offering diverse takes on traditional ideas and forms in a variety of disciplines. Events will include concerts and other artistic performances, spoken word, educational presentations and lectures, demonstrations and more.
Intersections fits directly into the mission of Park & Market by forging connections between people, artists, educators, businesses and innovators both in San Diego and worldwide. The series is curated by Andrew Waltz, Director of Arts Management at Park & Market along with leading ethnographer-artist Yale Strom, who will also serve as host of the concert series offering authentic explorations of global music.
The new program was launched on January 27 with “6 & 88” featuring Irving Flores, Tina Chong & Joshua White. The trio of world-renowned San Diego pianists shared the stage for the first time with a riveting exploration of the piano through jazz, Latin and classical music. Irving Flores is an accomplished pianist, composer, arranger and music producer. His newest album, “The Irving Flores Danzon-Jazz Trio” features nine compositions written and arranged by the artist. Tina Chong is a concert pianist and teaching artist who performs in a wide range of genres such as classical, jazz, pop, Broadway, and film music in orchestra and chamber ensembles, as well as dance collaborations. Chong is based in San Diego where she plays in the San Diego Symphony and teaches at San Diego State University. Pianist and composer Joshua White brings both creativity and technical accomplishment to his performances. He tours actively throughout Europe, Africa and Asia but can most often be heard with his critically-acclaimed TRIO (featuring Karl McComas-Reichl, bass & Tyler Kreutel, drums).
Following the performance, Yale Strom moderated a Q&A with the artists, an opportunity for attendees to be inspired by their creativity and develop a deeper appreciation for their craft.
