Opera Neo’s Sensational Modern Take on Mozart’s ‘Mitridate’ Transcends Time.
In a brilliant blend of centuries, Opera Neo immersed audiences at UC San Diego Park & Market into the world of Mozart’s “Mitridate, re di Ponto”, or “Mithridates, King of Pontus.” The 18th-century opera seria focuses on fictitious sibling rivalries between two princes and their love for their father’s young fiancé. Composed when Mozart was just 14 years old, “Mitridate” received a present-day makeover that left audience members in awe.
Opera Neo Stage Director and Conductor Peter Kozma used Park & Market’s non-traditional setting for an operatic performance as inspiration to innovate. The performance was enhanced by wireless microphones and a stage placed in front of a giant video screen; performers utilized the space’s grand spiral staircase and a second stage below for different scenes. It all culminated in a spectacularly captivating setting.
The combination of state-of-the-art audio and video production, along with a stellar cast and orchestra, elevated this performance to new heights. It showcased the company’s dedication to pushing boundaries and exploring fresh possibilities.
This modern interpretation of “Mitridate, re di Ponto” was a testament to the enduring power of music and its ability to bridge the gap between centuries, captivating audiences with its timeless beauty and innovation.
