Flamenco Magic with Lakshmi Basile “La Chimi” and Blues Bliss with Mamie Minch & Mara Kaye
On July 27, 2023, the UC San Diego Park & Market Intersections Concert Series presented an exceptional performance of cultural fusion and musical talent, featuring world-renowned flamenco artist Lakshmi Basile, famously known as “La Chimi.” Held in Park & Market’s Guggenheim Theatre, the event was a true celebration of artistic diversity and innovation.
La Chimi transported the audience into the dazzling world of flamenco. Her dance, described as “conquered joy” by poet and flamencologist Félix Grande, captured the hearts of those in attendance. Her performance was a testament to the universal language of music and dance, transcending borders and cultures to inspire and delight.
The extraordinary evening also featured the musical explorations of horn band Souls on Fire and Hot Pstromi, delving into the rich traditions of flamenco and Sephardic music and dance. Hosted by world-renowned ethnographer-artist Yale Strom, this event was a spirited evening of diverse cultural expressions.
On August 10, 2023, blues artists Mamie Minch and Mara Kaye serenaded audience members with blues from a bygone era during “Beyond the Blues with Mamie Minch and Mara Kaye”. The two blues artists combined their one-of-a-kind voices for an unforgettable evening of blues and jazz music. They were joined on guitar by talented blues artist and San Diego treasure, Nathan James.
The Intersections Concert Series, organized by UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies, has quickly become a San Diego beacon for those seeking fresh perspectives on traditional art forms. This innovative series takes place at Park & Market, a multi-tenant, mixed-use building that serves as a hub for business, arts, and education. Performances are presented each month in the building’s Guggenheim Theatre, where memorable experiences flourish in the intimate, state-of-the-art space.
