San Diego Unified School District, in partnership with global software giant Intuit, unveiled the first student-operated food truck, “Sunset Bites,” at UC San Diego Park & Market.
The new food truck supports the culinary programs at Morse, Hoover, Garfield, Mira Mesa, and San Diego High Schools, with these schools sharing the operation of their own food truck business.
Intuit, the company behind technology platforms including TurboTax and QuickBooks, announced its innovative Food Truck Program in September 2023. The program’s purpose is to impact underserved youth attending high schools in Prosperity Hub School Districts nationwide by providing fully operational, commercial-grade food trucks to school districts, paired with a curriculum for teaching students how to run and operate a small business using Intuit’s financial tools, like QuickBooks.
The food truck’s exciting unveiling, which included an official ribbon-cutting ceremony, took place in the Park & Market Amphitheater with over 300 students, San Diego Unified leadership, and Intuit staff in attendance.
